Lab Leadership Workshop - CANCELLED

Are you a post-doc about to embark on the hunt for that elusive beast---the assistant professor position? Are you a newly appointed faculty member struggling with the demands of balancing research, teaching, and service? Are you a mentor to a junior colleague on the job market or starting their first academic appointment?

The ASPB and CSPP are committed to the professional development of early career plant scientists and will be offering a Lab Leadership Workshop that will run immediately prior to their Joint Annual Meeting (Plant Biology 2010) from Thursday, July 29th to Saturday, July 31st. The workshop is designed to bring together young scientists considering (or already beginning) careers in academia as independent researchers.

Come get advice on the academic job search from plant biologists who have been through the application, interview, and negotiation processes at various institutions. Join us as we help you to navigate the process of getting tenure through sessions on teaching, getting published, and grantsmanship. Learn about how to effectively manage your time and increase your productivity and how you can identify mentors to assist you in your career progression, as well as how you can provide effective mentorship and inspiration to the members of your research group. We'll also discuss the nuts and bolts of laboratory management and how you can foster an excellent and diverse research environment through effective laboratory leadership. Ultimately, science takes place in the broader context of society and we will discuss ethics in science as well as the wonderful opportunities available for scientific outreach to the broader public.

The format is primarily panel discussions and workshops and there will be many opportunities for informal discussions and networking. Spaces in this workshop are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so save the date!

Additional information will be available shortly on the ASPB website at: http://www.aspb.org/pb-2010/Labmanagement.cfm
